There are very many reasons why people leave their cars on
the side of the road, and just as many for why you should never do this. How
so?
First off, leaving a car abandoned on the side of the road
can end up with getting a ticked, but also with your car being towed and
stored, making it a very expensive trip road trip for you.
Of course, you can find yourself unable to drive your car to
a safe parking place because you’re out of gas, or maybe you have a flat tire
or simply a car breakdown.
So what to do next? Who are you going to call? No
the ghost busters, that’s for sure.
Here are the simple steps you need to take when your car
breaks down and you’re force to leave it on the side of the road.
What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down on the Road
The first step you need to take is to get your car as closest
as possible to the side of the road, and if possible pull it into the shoulder
of the road, and never over the fog line.
Otherwise, it is considered a safety hazard and will be towed
immediately after the police will notice it. And yes, parts of all highways and
interstates are tow-away zones, unfortunately for drivers.
If your car breaks down in areas where there’s no such
restrictions and it doesn’t represent a safety hazard, you have 24 hours to
move your car from the side of the road.
On secondary roads, you have 48 hours to remove your car.
Put on the emergency flashes so the other people are able to
see that, as well as the police officers.
If you want to leave the car on the side of the road until
you get assistance, you need to notify the WSP (for state freeways and
highways) or local law enforcement by leaving a note explaining what happened
and a contact.
This will give you a little bit of leeway if they see you’re
going to return in an hour or so.
Lastly, if you’re returning to your car and it’s no longer
there, contact the appropriate WSP district office or the local law enforcement
in the county where you left your car to recover it.
Regulations Regarding Abandoning Car on the Side of the Road
When the law enforcement officers spot a car abandoned on the
side of the road, they will first check if there’s people inside for safety
reasons.
It the car has no passengers inside, the officers will stick
an orange tag onto it, as a sign that the car has been checked by the police.
This gives the car owner 18, 24 or 48 hours to come pick the
car, depending on the road category.
If the car is still there after the elapsed time, the law
enforcement officers will stick a green tag on the car signifying a second
check and stipulating the time that has elapsed from the first check and this
one.
If the car hasn’t been removed from the side of the road at a
third police check, then it is considered abandoned and it will be towed and
stored, until the car owner will come for it.
